This is something I wrote back in Sept. 2005 - its a little rough and I wrote with the intention of using it in my world but I wanted to share it so if its useful to anyone please feel free.

Berserker fern

Description : These plants stand between 3 - 5 ft. tall and grow to be about
3 - 5 ft. in diameter and cover large areas of the valley floor. They are various shades of bright green with almost a blood red color streaking from the leaves to the stalks. Each of the large stalks (3d4) grow from the ground producing three large fan shaped leaves and a spine covered pod that juts from the center. An adult plant produces a slightly sweet aroma in a 5 foot radius that would remind you of vanilla. Its has a thick fibrous skin that resists fire and cold (sav. no dam. Failed 1/2.) Regenerates 3hps a round.

Combat/Tactics : The Berserker Fern produces a slightly sweet pheromone out to a 5 ft. radius from the outer edge of the plant. This pheromone causes the victim to be less cautious, more at ease ( characters passing thru the valley will think it a good place to rest or set up camp ) and draws them closer to the pods (save vs. charm - characters that save are not drawn closer but still feel the charm like effects and suffer a -1 cumulative penalty each round there in range of the pheromone). As the victim gets closer the pods (about the size of a small melon) they slowly position themselves to release their deadly spores. Once in range the plant it spews forth a jet stream cloud of spores into the victim’s face (save vs. breath weapon at a -4). The spores immediately go to work on the soft mucous membrane of the eyes nose and throat, within seconds of a failed save the victim’s nose and throat swells shut cutting off its air as the vessels in the eyes begin to burst and the whites become red. If the save is successful the victim is still partially incapacitated (-2 AC. - 4 ATT.) and has a hard time focusing due to the swelling and burning caused by the spores.

Habitat/Society : Found only in a small valley somewhere in the Mts. of Alkammar. These plants seem to be indigenous of the area and haven't been found anywhere else in the realm. Sages are unsure why these plants have never migrated out of the valley with such readily means of doing so. Not much else is known about these plants besides a rumor that a very powerful airborne poison can be harvested from them. Its been said that almost any thief would pay handsomely for a pod from one of these plants and most alchemists as well.
